For a child, getting into a pool can be a big moment. For a parent, so can watching that first splash turn into a smile.
At Water Babies in West Chester, those moments are part of a weekly swimming journey for children from three months through age six. In baby and toddler classes, a parent or caregiver joins their child in the water while a certified instructor uses songs, play, and activities to introduce swimming skills and water safety.
The Water Babies curriculum draws on child development research and reflects how children learn at different ages and stages. Through playful, structured lessons, the program aims to:
- Help children build confidence and positive feelings about the water.
- Create time for babies and caregivers to bond.
- Encourage balance and coordination through movement.
- Give children a familiar weekly routine in which to practice new skills.
The lessons are designed to meet children where they are. Some swimmers jump right in; others need time to get comfortable. Some learn through repetition, while others respond to play and exploration. Every child learns differently, and instructors adapt lessons to different personalities, abilities, and learning styles. All instructors complete rigorous specialist training to support that individual approach.

That individual attention matters to owner Dmitry. His two sons had different experiences learning to feel comfortable in the water, which shaped his belief in giving children a supportive start from an early age.

Abby, the main swim teacher, brings a lifelong love of swimming to her classes. She competed as a child and teenager, then went on to coach the same team she once swam for. Her experience teaching children and her work as an EMT shape the supportive, safety-conscious approach she brings to each lesson.
Water Babies offers 30-minute weekly classes at its location on Route 202, just south of West Chester. As children grow, the lessons build on their skills and grow independence. Along the way, instructors get to know each child and family, helping them recognize and celebrate progress at their own pace.
Every child's swimming journey begins differently. A cautious splash, a new game, or a moment of growing confidence can all be worth celebrating.
